Team SGS

More benefits start here

We’ve been “all about you” since before it was fashionable. And it’s way more than fashion to us. At Schmunk Gatt Smith & Associates, our statement – More benefits than you planned for™ – is backed by a dedicated, savvy team who walk the talk.

Our clients stay with us for the long term. We are the official employee benefit representatives for many of the top associations in British Columbia.

When it comes to insurance and group benefits, we’ve definitely been there, done that, and loved every step of the way. We can get you there, too.

Bob Schmunk

As founding partner in 1975, Bob has instilled core values that apply stability, continuity, and longevity as cornerstone attributes to ensure that relationships with clients and staff are solidified for the long-term. In 2000, he received the “Excellence in Service” award from the Federation of Community Social Services for his contributions to the social service sector of British Columbia. Over the past 19 years, his dedication is also clearly evident in his humanitarian and philanthropy work within the Canadian penal system and the establishment of churches and rehabilitation centers in Russia. The proud grandfather of five, he lives in Surrey with his wife Lil.

Greg Wyatt

Greg’s favourite TV show is “How It’s Made,” and this fascination for invention and re-invention can be found in the way he approaches everything. As a partner in – and key contributor to – the firm for many years, his integrity and flair for streamlining efficiencies has been instrumental in earning the company’s reputation for the most effective client service. As a pilot in his personal life, he is currently re-learning his flying skills to bring more precision. Not surprisingly, his favourite quote is Sir Winston Churchill’s “Never, never, never, never give up.” His tenacity and quest for the perfect solution has benefited over 800 clients since 1985 when he first joined the firm. He lives in Pitt Meadows with his wife Judy, and loves spending time with his grandchildren.

Darren Schmunk

Loyalty and family values characterize Darren, who joined Schmunk Gatt Smith in 1991 after graduating from Simon Fraser University. Group benefits and pensions, in both the private and public sectors, are his area of expertise. His dedication and attention to detail are evident in the leadership role he plays at SGS in creation of innovative solutions for organizations. Outside of work, Darren enjoys watching documentaries, loves to golf and play basketball, and has been active in the musical leadership of his church for over 20 years. He plays an active part in the local community by coaching basketball at the high school level. Darren and his wife Bonnie live in Langley with their two daughters.

Lu DiMeglio

Every day, Lu proudly drinks his coffee out of a “Best Dad” mug given to him by his three children, and considers his family the most important part of his life. Since joining the company in 1999, Lu has worked on many different association plans, creating innovations in cost savings and the management of benefit programs. And work is not the only place where nothing gets by him – he is an avid ice hockey fan, and plays goalie for a number of different teams. Lu is a Canucks seasons’ tickets holder, and actively contributes to causes impacting addictions and youth at risk, both locally and internationally. Together with his wife, Tania, and their children, Surrey is the home they return to, from their many travel adventures and cruises around the world.

Drew Scharf

Drew has a strong appreciation for the kind of old school craftsmanship that was all about using quality materials and products, with lifetime guarantees. It comes as no surprise, then, to know that his favorite TV show is Discovery Channel’s great Biker Build-Off series from a few years back. An “anti cookie-cutter” thinker, Drew brings this flair to his design of benefit plans for new clients and evaluation of current plans to reduce costs. His dedication to a high level of customer service can also be seen in his expertise with personal disability, life and critical illness insurance. As a relatively new father (his daughter Haleigh is a year old), he can often be found watching Sesame Street in Pitt Meadows, where he lives with his wife Jennifer. His hobbies include motorcycles, music, being outdoors, spending time with his family and eBay.

Stephen Kim

Stephen joined the company in 2006, bringing extensive knowledge in extended health, dental, life and disability group benefits gained from his years at Pacific Blue Cross. An admirer of Albert Einstein, Stephen’s easy-going style allows him to think outside the box and see multiple dimensions of any problem. He lives in Langley with his wife Rachel and two children, Matthew and Lauren.

Wendy Fanzega

When Wendy joined the firm in 1990, she brought eight years of client service in the industry to the table. She loves character-driven television shows (like Grey’s Anatomy), dislikes mess and has a very high attention to detail. This is the perfect mix of talents for the various hats she wears in the office – accounting, payroll and office management! With high family values (her mother is her heroine), Wendy holds her longevity in the firm very dear. She lives in Pitt Meadows with her husband Larry, and their two five year old “fur babies”, and enjoys digital scrap-booking in her spare time.

Elsie Frank

Elsie’s natural interest in people, joy of sharing and ability to be in the background makes her an excellent listener. Since 1999, she has used this ability to enhance the lives of her co-workers and the many clients she serves in her administrative capacities at Schmunk Gatt Smith & Associates. She considers the raising of her family her greatest achievement. Proud parents of three children and five grandchildren, she and her husband Daryl live on an acreage in Langley. Besides a love for travel, Elsie enjoys bringing her personal flair to home decorating and sewing, and has been active in the leadership within her church for over a decade.

Julie Pietraroia

Julie is one of those perfectionists who delivers with grace and class, she’s been bringing this gift to the firm since joining in 2007. The daughter of entrepreneurial parents, she believes strongly in treating people well, and has derived a lot of pleasure in providing exceptional customer satisfaction to our clientele. A successful multi-tasker in all areas of her life, she has a passion for travel, dance and the many aspects of gardening. Julie married her husband Shane in 2009 and they currently live in Cloverdale, with a dog and a 19 year-old cat.
